When Emily, a second-year student at NYITCOM started her journey here, she hadn’t given much thought to getting a stethoscope. “It wasn’t even on the equipment list. I just didn’t think twice about it,” she remembers. But at orientation, she learned that she would soon receive her very first stethoscope—engraved with her name—at NYITCOM’s annual white coat ceremony. “For it to be my first stethoscope and also have my name on it, it just really felt like mine. That was so awesome, and made everything feel real.” This powerful tradition ensures that each new class of students is equipped with not just the necessary tools, but also feels a sense of belonging at NYITCOM.

“I didn’t realize how much we have access to, especially now with the new BRIIC building. The possibilities we have are truly endless. I’m very appreciative and grateful.”

D.O. Class of 2028

Emily grew up on Long Island, not far from where she would eventually begin her path to becoming a D.O. After completing her undergraduate studies further from home, she felt strongly about returning to Long Island for medical school. She heard about NYITCOM as a senior in college, while working alongside alumnus Dr. Craig Perlman, and was immediately drawn to the school’s stellar reputation and welcoming atmosphere. These kinds of connections are what makes the NYITCOM community so special. From one generation of physicians to the next, our alumni empower our students.

Every day, Emily comes to NYITCOM with a “say yes” mentality. While her primary interest is pediatrics, Emily's friendships with her classmates have led her to explore all areas of medicine. Whether she’s participating in the NYITCOM chapter of American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, or attending a talk on Orthopedic surgery from NYITCOM alum Dr. Bitterman, Emily truly embraces learning at every opportunity. She also recently trained on an advanced microscope at the newly opened Biomedical Research, Innovation, and Imaging Center (BRIIC) facility. “I didn’t realize how much we have access to, especially now with the new BRIIC building. The possibilities we have are truly endless. I’m very appreciative and grateful.”

At NYITCOM, faculty are committed to truly understanding a student’s personal goals and directing them there. For example, Dr. Chan recently invited Emily to shadow him in a pediatric setting, giving her first-hand experience in the field. Emily also recently attended a biotech summit at the suggestion of Dr. Beatty, where she learned about cutting-edge technology relevant to her research on brain cancer and connected with experts in the field. “Dr. Beatty loves looping students in. I really appreciate that he wants us to be involved. It’s not very hard to find those opportunities; they’re there. Faculty want you to be involved and be a part of it.”

Whether you are an alum or friend of the College of Osteopathic Medicine, you are part of a community that has empowered students like Emily to succeed.
